“Marit’s Journey to Becoming a Pro Cyclist and His Victories at the Giro d’Italia 2022”

If his team “believes” so much in him, it is because he has achieved some good performances in the past. Formed in the youth team of Lotto-Soudal, Marit hoped to turn professional there as he had been promised but he never received the much hoped-for offer. Suddenly, he had to accept his fate and sign with Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise where he turned professional.

It was with this team that he won the greatest victory of his career in 2021: the Grand Prix du Morbihan ahead of Bryan Coquard et Elia Viviani, a few days following finishing seventh in Paris-Tours. Last year, bad luck followed him, not allowing him to continue his progress. Between coronavirus infection, falls and injuries, the 2022 vintage looked like a long difficult year.

Arrived this season at Intermarché-Circus-Wanty, Marit notably stood out by achieving a top 10 in Paris-Nice and another in the Tour of Catalonia. This is enough to give him a lot of confidence as he approaches this Giro, which he got off to a very good start.

Within the peloton, Marit is also close to… Remco Evenepoel. A year older than him, the sprinter explained that he had a long discussion with the world champion during the race. “I think we rode 30 kilometers side by side just to chat. He said, ‘Yesterday was for me, today is for you'”he declared to our colleagues at Newspaper.

Filled with confidence, Marit will now try to fulfill the prophecy of the pink jersey a day late this Monday. However, he is aware that his climbing abilities are inferior to those of Michael Matthews et Mads Pedersen whom he designates as favorites for the day’s stage. If he’s still in the pack in the final package, Marit might do well.
