Maritime pollution: around 170 billion plastic fragments float

A scientific report, published on the site PLOS onediscovered that much of the debris floating in the ocean was dumped more than 18 years ago. And it was estimated that they float regarding 170 billion productsmostly microplastics.

Maritime pollution has advanced worryingly and presents the highest current figure in years. In addition, the research assumes that this process will accelerate.

Maritime pollution presents the highest figure in years

The study collected samples from more than 11 monitoring stations globally and the data ranges from 1979 to 2019. The researchers found that until 1990 there was not a large amount of plastics, but starting in 2005, those indices skyrocketed. The author of the investigation, Lisa Erdl explained that the increase in plastics is due to growth in production. At the same time, plastic waste dump control policies are limited.

Plastic waste in the seas

The report estimated that the G-20 countries will double the amount of plastic waste by 2050, reaching 451 million tons. Recycling in developed countries has had a low impact. Without a control policy, waste in landfills will end up in the sea.

In December, more than 160 countries met in Uruguay to negotiate a global agreement once morest maritime pollution. The second meeting will be held in France. The main points lie in fines for pollutants, taxes on producers and the ban on single-use plastics.
