Maritime links between Spain and Morocco: the recovery is complete

Maritime link Spain -Morocco

The resumption of maritime links between Spain and Morocco is complete. Since Tuesday, people alone and with vehicles have been able to make the crossing.

Maritime passenger traffic with vehicles, between Spain and Morocco, from Algeciras, Tarifa and Almería to Moroccan ports resumed on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. This comes a week following the reopening of the maritime borders between the two countries. Tuesday April 12 last in fact, passengers had started to make the crossing from the piers in Spain.

This link had been suspended for two years. First for reasons of health crisis, followed by a diplomatic crisis between the two kingdoms, Cherifian and Iberian, linked to the admission of Brahim Ghali (head of the Polisario) in Spanish hospitals. The traffic has taken back following the visit to Morocco, on Thursday April 7, by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez. The latter had been invited by King Mohammed VI, following he recognized the Moroccanness of Western Sahara.

As a bargaining chip for this act of recognition, Madrid obtained commitments from Rabat to no longer try to hold sway over the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, but also to manage the migration issue well. Moreover, on this last point, Morocco is trying to keep its word, by making life difficult for migrants trying to reach Spain. With this complete resumption of connections, the quays of Algeciras and Tarifa are taken by storm.

Passengers with a ticket, a vaccination certificate or a PCR test are authorized to board. A total of 16 ferries were on the program: 10 which were to leave Algeciras to reach Tangier-Med and 6 shuttles from Tarifa to Tangier-Ville. According to information from Bladi, the Wasa Express ferry from the Baleària shipping company will be in charge of transporting more than 300 passengers and more than 100 vehicles, this Tuesday alone, from Almería to Nador.
