The death of actress Marissa Haque has caused deep sorrow. Even though Marissa was previously in good health or not sick. Marissa reportedly died suddenly while sleeping.

Heart and blood vessel specialist Dr. Vito Anggarino Damay explained the case of sudden death in sleep.

“This condition is often referred to as Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) or sudden cardiac death, where the heart stops suddenly.

“Even though the family doesn’t know about the history of the disease, cases of blood vessel blockage sometimes go undetected or undiagnosed until a sudden incident occurs,” explained Vito, Wednesday (2/10).

This often happens because they don’t or rarely have regular medical check-ups because they feel healthy, don’t have any complaints, or are afraid of being discovered as having heart disease.

He said that to determine the cause of death, further examination such as an autopsy or medical tests was needed. However, in general, sudden death in sleep is often caused by heart problems.

Cardiac arrest and heart attack are two different conditions, although both involve the heart. But a heart attack causes cardiac arrest.

“Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating effectively, so that blood is no longer pumped throughout the body. This is usually caused by a disturbance in the heart’s electrical system, such as a fatal arrhythmia,” said Vito.

When a cardiac arrest occurs, a person will lose consciousness and their heartbeat will not be detected. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate action, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or the use of a defibrillator to restore normal heart rhythm.

“A heart attack or myocardial infarction occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is obstructed, usually by a blood clot that blocks the coronary arteries,” he said.

This causes damage to the heart muscle. A heart attack usually does not cause the heart to immediately stop beating, but if left untreated, it can trigger heart rhythm complications such as cardiac arrest.

So the bottom line is that a heart attack is a circulation problem that causes damage to the heart muscle, while cardiac arrest is an electrical problem that causes the heart to stop suddenly.

“However, cardiac arrest is often caused by a heart attack. Blockage of the heart’s blood vessels or heart attack causes electrical disturbances to the heart and cardiac arrest occurs,” he concluded. (Z-9)
