Māris Grigalis is one of the most well-known people in Latvia – he plays music, is a DJ, and hosts events, but people know him best as the “old man” of weather news, who tells the weather on TV screens.

This year, on August 31, the legendary Latvian group “Jumprava” held a fantastic anniversary concert at Mežapark’s Big Stage, which gathered thousands of spectators and turned into an extremely emotional event. However, before the “Jumprava” musicians stepped on the gigantic stage, none other than Māris Grigalis took care of “warming up” the audience.

However, a few days later the magazine “Kas Jauns” released the latest issue, where an entire opening discussed not what Mara’s performance was like, but the fact that he has hair in his armpits. Now Grigalis talks about it openly in the TV3 talk show “Zilonis studija”.

He believes as follows:

It never occurred to me that one day in life someone could discuss my armpits… My parents were surprised at how far we’ve gone… I thought it was quite shallow and it reflects the shallowness of the person who wrote this article and then published it in the “nations” – not this person saw my performance on the Mežaparka Grand Stage, but only… my armpits.

I also admire and find shallow the people who discussed my armpits after this article came out – how much hair is in my armpits. People probably have nothing else to do.

Now Maris speaks openly about such topics, but the host of “Elephant in the studio” wants to know, has it always been like this that he can be so open about things that affect him?

Those who remember the Soviet times and their “system” – I was eleven years old and I had hair growing on my legs. And this Soviet system had restricted everything so far that I thought my leg hair was different from other guys’ legs.

And then I tried to get rid of those feathers at home… Because everyone had the same sneakers and no one had feathers on their feet. Today we are free. During the Soviet era, everyone ate the same porridge and walked in the same sneakers.

Māris Grigalis: The Armpit Chronicles

Ah, Latvia! A land of rich folklore, frolicking forests, and Māris Grigalis—who, mind you, is not just your average weatherman. For those unfamiliar, he’s the “old man” of weather news, the maestro of meteorology, and apparently, the unwitting star of an armpit exposé! In a world where music, art, and the occasional existential crisis usually take center stage, it seems there’s a hairy diversion we just can’t overlook.

From Stage to Armpit: The Unexpected Plot Twist

So, there we were, celebrating the legendary Latvian band, Jumprava, at their stunning anniversary concert at Mežapark’s Big Stage. Thousands gathered to bask in the melodious glory of a band that could make even the grumpiest of folks tap their toes. But before the confetti settled, Māris Grigalis took the pre-show role of warming up the audience, likely with more enthusiasm than a kid on Christmas morning.

However, in a turn of events that would make even the most seasoned storytellers scratch their heads, a few days later, one magazine, “Kas Jauns”, decided to focus not on his electric performance but rather his—wait for it—armpit hair! Yes, folks, we’ve leaped from euphoric musical experiences to the naked truth about his underarm fuzz. It’s like watching a well-crafted heist movie suddenly devolve into an infomercial about top-quality razors.

Māris Takes the Stage… of Public Opinion

In a brave and commendable move, Māris took to the airwaves on TV3’s talk show “Zilonis studija” to address this hairy situation head-on. He responded with the sort of cheeky eloquence that would make any stand-up comedian proud. “It never occurred to me that one day in life someone could discuss my armpits…” he mused. A definite masterclass in taking the high road, sprinkled liberally with a dose of disbelief!

Grigalis’ parents must have been sitting there thinking, “Is our son now famous for lathering on the deodorant?” What a time to be alive, where one can achieve notoriety for their choice to embrace a little natural body hair! It’s as if the critics holding the magnifying glass to his armpits had nothing better to discuss—because apparently, they have entirely run out of topics related to music, art, or, oh, I don’t know, the weather!

Looking Back: The “Feather” Years

Turning the nostalgia dial back to those drab Soviet times, Māris found himself grappling with hair—leg hair, to be precise. “At eleven years old, I had hair growing on my legs,” he recalled. The thought of leg hair being a badge of honor was as foreign as vodka at a tea party. What did those poor lads have to do to fit in? The very notion that Soviet sneakers and porridge could somehow provide us with a more “homogenous” experience—well, isn’t that just a trip down the cringe-worthy memory lane?

Today, in what can only be classified as a victory of personal expression over enforced conformity, our beloved Māris stands proudly amidst this chaotic fanfare, showing that hair—be it on your head or under your arms—is not the only thing worth discussing in the grand mosaic of life!

The Bottom Line: Embrace the Fuzz!

In conclusion, will Māris Grigalis be forever known as the man brought to fame by his armpits? Quite possibly! But one can hope this little furor will prompt everyone to take a closer look at what we deem worthy of our attention. Let’s celebrate not just the hair—be it art or rather the artistry behind it—but the talented individual behind the weather front.

Who knows? The next big headline might not just come from the usual celebrities but rather from the extraordinary places we least expect—namely, the underarm region. So here’s to you, Māris, the unterrifying titan of underarm hair and weather reports alike! May your next concert performance make headlines for something less… hairy!

Māris Grigalis is a household name in Latvia, celebrated not only for his musical talents as a DJ and event host but primarily recognized as the beloved “old man” of weather broadcasts, delivering meteorological updates across national television screens.

This year, on August 31, the iconic Latvian band “Jumprava” celebrated a momentous anniversary concert at the illustrious Mežapark’s Big Stage, drawing in a massive crowd of enthusiastic spectators. The atmosphere was charged with emotion, and the excitement was palpable. Before the talented musicians of “Jumprava” took to the enormous stage, it was none other than Māris Grigalis who electrified the audience, effectively setting the stage for an unforgettable night.

However, just a few days after this spectacular event, the magazine “Kas Jauns” released its latest issue, which sparked significant conversation—not over Māris’s dynamic performance but rather fixating on the unexpected topic of his armpit hair. This peculiar focus led Grigalis to address the matter candidly on the TV3 talk show “Zilonis studija.”

He openly expressed his disbelief about the media’s fixation, stating, “It never occurred to me that one day in my life, someone could discuss my armpits. My parents were shocked at how far we’ve come as a society. It seems quite shallow, reflecting the trivial nature of the person who decided to publish this story. They didn’t bother to observe my performance at the Mežaparka Grand Stage; they only saw… my armpits.”

Grigalis further voiced his disdain for the discourse surrounding his appearance that emerged after the article, lamenting, “I also find it quite shallow how much people fixate on the amount of hair in my armpits. It appears they have nothing else to discuss.”

Reflecting on his upbringing, Māris recalled the restrictive environment of the Soviet era, where individuality was stifled. “I was eleven years old when I began to notice the hair on my legs. The strict Soviet social norms made me feel that my leg hair set me apart from the other boys. I even attempted to remove those hairs at home, feeling the pressure of conformity since everyone wore the same sneakers without a hint of hair on their feet. Today, we enjoy the freedom to express ourselves authentically. Back in the Soviet days, all we were offered was the same bland porridge and identical sneakers.”

Maris shares his thoughts passionately during the program “Elephant in the studio,” addressing deeper societal issues.
