The 67-year-old American gave his voice to the famous plumber since 1991. He will now be “Mario Ambassador”.
« It’s-a-me, Mario ! ». Since 1991, the emblematic character of Nintendo had only one voice: that of Charles Martinet. The American branch of the Japanese company announced on Monday that the 67-year-old actor would stop doubling the famous plumber, following more than 30 years of service. “It was an honor to work with Charles to help Mario live for so many years and we want to thank him and celebrate him”comments the video game giant.
The actor had already been replaced by Chris Pratt in Super Mario Bros. the movies (2023), card of this beginning of the year with more than 1.3 billion dollars in worldwide receipts. Charles Martinet might nevertheless be heard in the role of the father of Mario and Luigi in one of the scenes of the film. From now on, the actor will be a “Ambassador Mario”according to a post on his X account.
A cult video game voice
In 1991, Charles Martinet auditioned to play a « Italian plumber in Brooklyn ». After having thought of a deep and stereotypical voice, the actor finally opts for higher intonations, more pleasant for the ears of children. After dubbing the mustachioed at several conventions, Charles Martinet became Mario’s official dubber with the release in 1996 of super mario 64.
For the first time, the plumber launches his famous onomatopoeia and cult phrases like « It’s-a-me, Mario ! » et ” Oh mama ! ». Following the huge success of the game, Charles Martinet lends his voice to other characters in the franchise such as Wario, Waluigi and their baby versions. More surprisingly, in 2011 he doubled Paarthurnax, the ancestral dragon of the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. A role far removed from Princess Peach’s Mushroom Kingdom.

Charles Martinet will therefore not appear in Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023), the new game from Nintendo’s flagship license. This new episode will mark a return to the profile view for the plumber and the other five playable characters. New: “wonder flowers” will lead to strange transformations of the decor, as well as of the game’s heroes. The first images show Mario in particular, changed into an elephant in certain parts of the adventure.
