Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: The producer comments on its success

The best-selling game Nintendo Switch keep talking about him. In question, the Additional circuit pack which began rolling out last month. This wave of DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers to revisit old circuits brought up to date. If eight of them have already been released, forty others will be added for a total of 48 races by the end of the year. Its producer, Kosuke Yabukirecently gave an interview to the Japanese business daily Nikkei. In this interview, he talks about the dazzling success of the title on Nintendo Switch. Here is a translation made by us:

Did you expect the game to be so successful, to the point of selling 40 million copies?

No, but if you think about it, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is perfectly adapted to the Switch. You can play the console anywhere and even split the controller in two, so it’s super easy to play it however you like with a friend or loved one. Five years after the game’s release, that appeal is still going strong.

What makes the Mario Kart franchise so popular, in your opinion?

Usually you don’t try to manhandle your competitors in racing games, but in Mario Kart you spend the entire race throwing shells and banana peels at them. Items are at the heart of the Mario Kart craze.

It’s a game that’s both accessible and deep. Some people only play it at Christmas or for a night out, while others play it every day to try to improve. We pay attention to these two audiences in order to balance the game accordingly.

How did you keep accessibility in mind when developing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

We wanted the game to be fun for anyone. It can be frustrating to lose, but during races there are so many things happening that make us smile or want to play again. In the end, we experience emotions that do not depend so much on the outcome of the race. We designed the game so that the most unthinkable things, like slipping on a banana peel just before the finish line, happen one after another.
