Marinos de Oriente forced a seventh game in Series C of the 2024 Professional Basketball Super League (SPB) postseason, after beating Pioneros del Ávila in overtime on Sunday.
The Eastern Battleship, which was down 3-1 in the series, beat the capital team with a score of 76-72 at the Rutaca Sport Arena in Maturín to achieve its second consecutive victory and tie the tie at three wins per side.
Ups and downs
The naval team, led by Argentine Silvio Santander, made the difference at the start of the match and then in overtime. After taking a seven-point lead in the first quarter, the team from Ciego de Ávila gradually reduced the deficit until the final minutes of regulation time.
With seconds left, Pioneros took the lead 67-66, but the home team responded with two points to go ahead 68-67. The visitors were able to tie the game from the free throw line and the final period ended, so they went into extra time.
Already in overtime, Marinos appealed to the weight of its history to win the five-minute partial 8-4 and take the victory that forced the decisive duel, which will be played this Monday, August 12, in the Monagas arena.
Luis Bethelmy was one of the main figures of the match for the eastern side. “El Tsunami” finished with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds in just over 41 minutes of play.
Classifieds
It is worth remembering that there are already three teams qualified for the Super Round of the SPB 2024. They are Gladiadores de Anzoátegui, Guaiqueríes de Margarita and Trotamundos de Carabobo.
The series between Marinos and Pioneros, as well as the one between Cocodrilos de Caracas and Broncos de Caracas, were extended to seven matches. However, on August 12, both series will be defined to determine the other two teams that advance to the next phase.
