Mariners Claim Hagen Danner Off Waivers from Blue Jays – MLB Trade Rumors

The Seattle Mariners have made a savvy addition to their pitching staff by claiming right-handed pitcher Hagen Danner off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. This move comes after the Blue Jays designated Danner for assignment last month, a process that was extended due to the holiday season. With this acquisition, the Mariners’ 40-man roster now has one spot remaining.

At 26 years old, Danner’s career has taken an unconventional path.Originally drafted as a catcher by the Blue Jays in 2017,he struggled at the plate and transitioned to pitching in recent years. His debut season on the mound in 2021 was promising, as he posted a stellar 2.02 ERA over 35⅔ innings at the High-A level. During that time, he struck out 29.4% of batters while maintaining a walk rate of just 8.4%.

Despite having only one full season as a pitcher in the minors, Danner’s background as a catcher made him eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. The Blue Jays, recognizing his potential, added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from being claimed by another team.

Injuries have been a recurring theme in Danner’s career. He missed much of the 2022 season, making only four appearances at the Double-A level. However, 2023 was a healthier year for him, as he pitched 39⅓ innings across multiple levels, recording a 3.66 ERA with an impressive 35.7% strikeout rate and a 7% walk rate. His major league debut was brief—just one-third of an inning—before an oblique strain sidelined him for six weeks. In 2024, he spent two more months on the minor league injured list but still managed to pitch 35⅓ innings with a solid 3.06 ERA, though his strikeout rate dipped to 24.2%.

This decline in strikeouts may have influenced the Blue Jays’ decision to part ways with Danner. Though, the Mariners see untapped potential in the young pitcher. With just over 100 professional innings under his belt, Danner remains a bit of a mystery. His remaining option year gives seattle the adaptability to evaluate him closely. He provides valuable depth for the team and,if he performs well, could be retained at a low cost given his limited service time.

for the Mariners, this move represents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity.Danner’s unique journey and potential make him an intriguing addition to their pitching staff. As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on how this decision plays out for both the player and the team.

By Archys, Archyde News editor

Archyde: Hagen, thank you for joining us today. The Seattle Mariners recently claimed you off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, marking a new chapter in your career. How are you feeling about this transition?

Hagen danner: Thank you for having me.it’s definitely an exciting time. The Mariners are a great organization, and I’m looking forward to contributing to their pitching staff. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but I’m ready to embrace this new opportunity.

Archyde: Your career has been anything but conventional. You were originally drafted as a catcher in 2017 by the Blue Jays. What prompted the switch to pitching?

Hagen Danner: It’s been quite a journey. When I was drafted, I was excited to develop as a catcher, but over time, it became clear that my skill set might be better suited for pitching.I’ve always had a strong arm,and the blue Jays saw potential in me as a pitcher. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I’m grateful for the chance to reinvent myself and grow in this role.

Archyde: Transitioning from a position player to a pitcher is no small feat. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during that process?

Hagen Danner: The biggest challenge was definitely the mental adjustment. As a catcher, you’re used to being involved in every play, calling pitches, and managing the game.As a pitcher,it’s a different kind of pressure—you’re the one executing the pitches and trying to outthink the batter. Physically, it was also a big shift. I had to build up my arm strength and refine my mechanics. It took a lot of work, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

Archyde: You were designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last month, which can be a tough experience for any player. How did you handle that period of uncertainty?

Hagen Danner: It’s never easy to hear that you’ve been DFA’d, but I tried to stay positive and focus on what I could control. I kept working on my craft, staying in shape, and trusting that another opportunity would come. The holiday season added a bit of a delay, but I’m grateful the Mariners saw something in me and gave me this chance.

Archyde: The Mariners’ 40-man roster now has one spot left after your acquisition. what do you think you bring to the team, and how do you see yourself fitting into their plans?

Hagen Danner: I bring versatility and a strong work ethic. I’ve been thru a lot in my career, and I think that resilience will serve me well. I’m ready to step into whatever role the team needs—whether it’s coming out of the bullpen or providing depth in the rotation. I’m here to compete and help the Mariners win.

Archyde: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the 2025 season?

Hagen danner: My main goal is to stay healthy and contribute to the team’s success. I want to prove that I belong at this level and show what I’m capable of. It’s been a long road, but I’m more motivated than ever to make the most of this opportunity.

Archyde: what message would you like to share with Mariners fans who are just getting to know you?

Hagen Danner: I’d say, “Thank you for the warm welcome.” I’m excited to be here and can’t wait to show you what I can do on the mound. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got, and I hope to make you proud.

archyde: Thank you, Hagen, for sharing your story with us. We wish you the best of luck with the mariners and look forward to seeing you on the mound this season.
