Mariah Carey Loses Mother and Sister on Same Day

Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia, and the singer’s older sister, Alison, died over the weekend, Carey said in an official statement, quoted Tuesday (8/27).

“I am devastated because I lost my mother last weekend,” Carey said. “My grief is compounded because my sister also passed away on the same day.”

Carey said she was happy to have spent time with her mother last week before she died.

The cause of death of Carey’s mother and sister was not disclosed.

Patricia, 87, is a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent.

In Carey’s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy winner described the complicated relationship between herself and her mother, saying it left her hurt and confused.

Caret said there was competition between the two and jealousy arose because of his success.

“But when that person is your mother and that jealousy is expressed at such a young age, it’s very hurtful,” Carey said.

However, Carey also admitted that she loves her mother very much.

He even wrote a dedication to his mother. “To Pat, my mother, who I’m sure has worked her hardest. I will try to love you the best I can, forever.”

In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, the 55-year-old singer said her mother’s criticism of her as a child had left a deep impression on her.

However, Carey admits that her mother was the one who made her fall in love with music.

Carey’s relationship with her sister, Alison, 63, is also complicated.

In her memoir, Carey admitted to distancing herself from her two sisters, Alison and Morgan, and said, “I felt safer physically and emotionally when I wasn’t in contact with them.”

Alison later sued Carey for $1.2 million over Carey’s statements in the memoir, claiming they caused her to feel emotionally assaulted.

Carey is one of the most successful singers in the world. Her Christmas song, All I Want For Christmas is You is the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist of all time.

Carey also holds the record for the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 by a solo artist with 19.
