Mariah Carey said she is in mourning after losing her mother and sister, who died a few days ago. The circumstances of the deaths of 87-year-old Patricia and 63-year-old Alison Carey are not yet known.

“My heart breaks as I lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life that same day. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to spend the last week with my mother before she passed. I appreciate the love, support and respect for my privacy during this difficult time,” the 55-year-old singer said in a statement to People magazine.

The five-time Grammy winner’s mother was an opera singer and vocalist, and it was from her that the singer inherited her vocal talent.

As the artist revealed in her autobiography “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” published four years ago, their relationship wasn’t easy. “Like so many other aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was full of contradictions and competing realities. It was never black and white—it was a rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a bittersweet mix of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. And yet, my heart is tied to hers,” the star revealed in the book.

Despite this, the ladies kept in touch and even appeared together in the 2010 ABC special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” where they sang the holiday song “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.” The singer dedicated her autobiography to her mother. “Pat, to my mother, who I believe did everything the best she could. I will always love you the best I can,” the star wrote in the dedication.

Carey’s relationship with her sister was much more complex. Alison struggled for years with a debilitating drug addiction, which she tried to get Mariah to take as a child.

In her memoirs, the successful singer recalled a shocking incident from the past. “When I was 12, my sister drugged me with Valium, offered me a dose of cocaine and… tried to sell me to a pimp. Something inside me stopped because of all that trauma. That’s why I often say I’m forever 12. I still struggle with that,” the artist revealed.

After the book was released, Alison categorically denied the accusations, calling them “cruel and outrageous.” The star’s sister then sued her for defamation, seeking damages of $1.25 million.

Alison had been HIV positive since around 1990. She regularly visited rehab centers. “Her sister financed many of these stays. Mariah is someone who doesn’t give up. At some point, however, she had to face the truth – you can’t help someone who doesn’t want help,” a person close to the singer revealed years ago. The artist tried to reconcile with her sister in 2002, after the death of their father Alfred Carey.
