Lawyer Omar Mora Tosta reported on Friday, August 16, that authorities charged the head of the Command with Venezuela in the state of Portuguesa, María Oropeza, with the crimes of “terrorism and incitement to hatred.”

Mora Tosta confirmed on her X account (formerly Twitter) that the Terrorism Control Court confirmed the news to the political leader’s mother, Flor Oropeza, and asked her to contact the Public Defender’s Office 94.

The defender also reported that María Oropeza is currently detained at the El Helicoide Penitentiary Center, headquarters of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin).

State security officials entered María Oropeza’s home without a warrant on August 7 and took her away. The incident was recorded live by the manager through their social networks.

Maria Oropeza’s mother had not seen her daughter for more than eight days

Flor Oropeza, mother of María Oropeza, confirmed in an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI) On August 16, she said she had not seen her daughter for more than eight days.

“Supposedly, she is in the Helicoide (a penitentiary that serves as the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service), but they do not allow me to see her. They tell me that she is fine. But one thing is what I tell myself, another thing is what I want to see,” he said.

Oropeza insisted that his daughter has always been involved in the political struggle in Venezuela and has always been a peaceful person.

“She is always involved in the struggle, which is politics. But this does not mean that she is a guarimbera, that is, she does not go around throwing stones at protests. No, she always acts peacefully through regular channels,” he added.

IACHR measures for María Oropeza

Following the raid on María Oropeza’s home and what lawyers described as a “forced disappearance,” the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted on August 11 precautionary measures in favor of the leader.

The IACHR issued Resolution 46/2024 on August 10. The document established that Oropeza is in a “serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage” to his rights in Venezuela.

The international judicial body added that the measures are aimed at determining Oropeza’s whereabouts, as well as demanding information from the authorities about the actions taken against him.

“The granting of the precautionary measure and its adoption by the State do not constitute a prejudgment regarding a possible petition before the inter-American system alleging violations of the rights protected in the American Convention and other applicable instruments,” the IACHR stated.
