He is a lawyer and has been working in Brussels for the last few years, specializing in Artificial Intelligence Law, Medicines and Health Sciences Law. President of the National Institute of Artificial Intelligence Law, a subject on which he has written, attended conferences and coordinated many initiatives.
Despite her experience abroad, she feels like a native of the Greek countryside, having been born and raised in Veroia and Naoussa, in a very large family.
Today, as a ND MEP candidate, Maria Oraiozili-Koutsoupias, answers the questions of “Peloponnisos”.
– You are one of the 42 total ND nominations for the European Parliament. Why do you invite people to trust you?
Because I have the necessary experience to defend their interests in the European Parliament in the crucial consultations that are coming up in the coming years. In my candidacy I want to represent a new generation of people, with technical knowledge, who want to contribute to their country.
– So I take it you want to focus on artificial intelligence, if elected?
Not only. I certainly think that there should be among the Greek representatives someone specialized in these matters, who will be able to understand the problems and work in the interest of Greece on them, in the European Parliament. The topics I have chosen to propose, apart from Artificial Intelligence, are the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), dealing with the Migration problem and Low Birth Rate. They are all very critical issues, which may even intersect with each other and which require complex solutions.
– You will have a positive opinion regarding the CAP, since your party voted for it.
The CAP is a particularly complex piece of legislation, as is Greece’s special strategic plan for the CAP. Obviously I agree in principle, as do most. But that doesn’t mean I don’t spot mistakes or that there isn’t room for improvement. For example, the green targets that have been introduced by the EU have proven to be not always realistic and workable. It may be that everyone agrees and says that the environment is above all. But for the farmer and rancher, things are not so simple. We cannot prohibit it from using a range of aids (biocides, etc.), have to protect all kinds of biodiversity, while at the same time allowing imports of competing products that are not subject to these restrictions.
– Can Greece influence the policies of Brussels in such matters?
So let’s be sure. And I keep repeating it. If the MEPs do not exercise influence, dynamically representing the Greek interests, not only of the producer, but also of the small and medium-sized entrepreneur, the self-employed, the Greek family, our students, then the Italians will do it for the Italians, the Portuguese for the Portuguese etc.
– And a commentary on current affairs. How do you evaluate Kasselaki’s references to homeland, religion, family?
I think that Mr. Kasselakis made these references in the form of a “rant”, to answer a slogan from a candidate of our own party. That is, it was not done in the context of any programmatic policy of his party. Of course, it seems very positive to me that he declares himself a believer and that he feels the need to share it with his audience. I think one’s faith is an important part of one’s value code. What I cannot applaud is that he tries to associate himself with our fellow men by citing a quasi-miracle which he was told took place at his baptism. Even if he does believe this, which is his right, the fact that he chose to advertise it in the middle of an election season I don’t think honors him politically.
