After nine votes, the plenary session of the Convention chose the constituent of Social Movements, María Elisa Quinteros, as its new president.

Faster was the process to appoint Jaime Bassa’s successor, where Gaspar Domínguez, from Independientes No Neutrales, got 112 votes in a single round.

Maria Elisa Quinteros She is a dentist from the University of Talca and a PhD in Public Health. The conventional one, of Constituent Social Movements, got 78 votes for the presidency, being elected in the ninth round.

His name was not on the table when the first nominations began to come out. In fact, the first letter was Cristina Dorador, who during the early hours of yesterday – regarding 2 in the morning – decided to step aside for not generating a broad consensus.

Once the above was cleared, the representatives of the different political forces of the left and the center-left met. It was around 4 in the morning when they raised the name of Quinteros.

The new vice president of the Convention is Gaspar Dominguez, who – unlike the position of presidency – managed to be elected in just one round, and with an overwhelming majority: 112 votes that came from all sectors, except Vamos por Chile.

Both constituents referred to the election.


Both received congratulations from different sides, such as the Government.

The president-elect did it earlier Gabriel Boric, who without receiving further questions, gave his support to the new president of the Convention.

The Broad Front got the worst of it, as it was unable to reach the body’s board of directors. This, despite the intense negotiations they held with various political forces.

In order to have more time and thus reach some kind of agreement regarding the vice presidency, they decided to vote for Beatriz Sánchez in the presidency, refraining from supporting María Elisa Quinteros. This, to force a tenth turn.

However, they did not count on what was going to happen: the support of the INN and Luciano Silva, of RN, a casting vote that managed to reach the necessary 78 votes.

Silva spoke with La Radio, and questioned the political management of the conventional Frente Amplio.
