CARACAS.— Opposition leader María Corina Machado stated yesterday that the presidential elections that Venezuela will hold on July 28 will put an end to socialism in the country, governed by Chavismo since 1999.
“That day, we will decree the end of socialism in Venezuela. Never once more,” said the former liberal representative – cited in a press release from her team – during a political event held in a town in the state of Falcón (northwest).
The opposition leader urged citizens to participate en masse in the July elections, and reiterated her invitation to vote for the candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD)—the main anti-Chavista coalition—former ambassador Edmundo González Urrutia, whom she described as a “serious, honorable man.”
On the other hand, on the occasion of Labor Day, hundreds of Venezuelan employees, most of them from the public sector, protested once morest the “poor” working conditions they face and to demand a salary with which they can satisfy their needs and those of their families. .
In a protest in Caracas, teacher Franklin Piccone, a member of the Federation of Unionized Education Workers (Fetrasined), told EFE that the “working conditions are very poor” and the government turns a “deaf ear” to their demands.
In another act, President Nicolás Maduro yesterday announced a 30% increase — to $130 — in the so-called “indexed minimum comprehensive income” (IMII), paid in bolivars at the official rate on the payment date and made up of two bonds that do not generate labor liabilities.
