The head of protection for Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, Milciades Ávila, was released on Thursday night, July 18, on precautionary measures, following more than 36 hours in detention. This was announced by Machado, who considered this event as a “first step to revert this injustice.”

Through the social network X, the former deputy indicated that Ávila, who was arrested during the early hours of Wednesday, was released with a “precautionary measure of presentation in court” every 30 days.

Machado shared a photo of the two of them hugging each other along with the message, at the moment when Ávila was received by the opposition party at the headquarters of her party, Vente Venezuela, in Caracas.

“Thank you to everyone who, with their support, contributed to making this first step possible to reverse this injustice,” added the opposition leader.

The arrest of Milciades Avila

Wednesday, July 17th Vente Venezuela warned of Ávila’s arrestin charge of ensuring the security of the opposition during the electoral campaign, in which Machado heads the activities, in various states of the country, of the standard-bearer of the majority opposition – Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) -, Edmundo González Urrutia.

According to the group, Machado’s “chief of protection” was “kidnapped” by “officials of the regime” of Nicolás Maduro, who “forcedly entered the house where he was staying, violating all legal procedures.”

Machado denounced an increase in “repression” this Thursday, when he warned of the cutting of “the brake hoses” one of the two vehicles with which she and her team travel the country.

In a video posted on social media, Machado said that the other car had “all the oil drained from its engine,” while showing the bodywork of both vehicles vandalized with white paint.

The former deputy described this incident as an “attack” and held President Nicolás Maduro responsible for any damage to her physical integrity and that of her collaborators.

As of Wednesday, July 17, according to the PUD, security officials have arrested 72 people since the campaign began on July 4, of whom more than 20 remain in prison.
