Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, said that she does not consider the possibility of repeating the presidential elections that took place on Sunday, July 28. The leader insisted that the results are already defined and believes that holding a new election has no basis.

“I don’t understand where this thesis, this initiative, comes from. I believe that the elections have already taken place in Venezuela and the results are there, the victory is there. So, ignoring what happened, I think that has no basis and I think that Venezuelan society would not support it. What must be done is to make the results count,” said Machado in an interview with several media outlets on August 7.

Regarding the events that have occurred in the country since July 28, Machado confirmed that “all scenarios were foreseen.”

“No one underestimates the totalitarian capacity of the system. The way in which they have clung to power (the ruling party), before and now. There are new forms of repression that are very cruel, more sophisticated. In addition, there has been massive repression, acting directly in popular areas,” said María Corina Machado.

Regarding the response of the international community, María Corina Machado highlighted the rejection of a large part of the governments of Latin America to the results delivered by the National Electoral Council (CNE), and that They declared Nicolás Maduro the winner. He said that the statements of the governments have been “forceful” and that “the world is convinced” that Edmundo González “won in a landslide.”

Venezuelan opposition does not plan to repeat elections

On August 5, opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa said that for The opposition is not considering the possibility of repeating the elections presidential.

“For us there is no new election. For us there was an election, and we demand that the results be recognized. The minutes that we made available to the public are not minutes from the opposition. This hypothesis was also rejected by former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, who said that it is “impossible” to support the idea of ​​repeating the elections. He insisted on the need to publish the minutes of the vote count.

“I do not deny that the escalation of the crisis could lead us to solutions of that type, but at this moment the Venezuelan people are focused on putting pressure, as is legitimate, on the institutions to function (…) The optimal solution, the one we support today, is the one that has to do with the publication of the results and the full functioning of the constitutional powers of the CNE,” Márquez said in an interview with Bluradio July 5th.

International pressure to publish the electoral records

Since July 29, when the CNE released its first bulletin of the elections, several members of the international community have spoken out against the results and demanded the publication of the minutes of the vote count.

On August 1, the governments of Colombia, Brazil and Mexico They asked the Venezuelan authorities to reveal the electoral records of the presidential elections in Venezuela.

“We are closely following the vote counting process and we call on the electoral authorities of Venezuela to move forward expeditiously and to make public the data broken down by voting table,” the statement reads.

The three Latin American governments insisted that the sovereignty of the citizens who participated in the presidential elections on Sunday, July 28, 2024, be respected.

For his part, Chilean President Gabriel Boric has reiterated that he will not recognize Nicolás Maduro’s proclamation. In his speech on August 7, the Chilean president said he had no doubts that “Maduro has tried to commit fraud”.

Other governments such as the United States, Uruguay, Argentina and Costa Rica have announced that they recognize Edmundo González as the winner of the Venezuelan presidential elections.
