Edmundo González issued a statement in which he wrote the reasons why he will not appear before the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) on Wednesday, August 7. The president of the judicial body, Caryslia Rodríguez, He summoned the opposition leader for 11:00 am.

“In short, if I go to the Electoral Chamber under these conditions, I will be absolutely vulnerable due to defenselessness and violation of due process, and I will put at risk not only my freedom but, more importantly, the will of the Venezuelan people expressed on July 28, 2024 and the gigantic effort of the Venezuelans who have participated in this process so that we could obtain evidence of the vote validly cast by the citizens,” he wrote in the document published on his X account.

The politician explained that the legal process being carried out by the TSJ does not correspond to any procedure contemplated in the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice or any other law on electoral jurisdiction.

Judge Rodríguez said that both González and the leaders of the Democratic Unity Roundtable, A New Time and Movement for Venezuela had to appear before the court to submit all the electoral material in their possession and then respond to the questions posed by the judicial body.

“In what kind of procedure is it intended that I intervene? Where is a hearing or inquisitorial process planned before the Electoral Chamber to certify results and to preliminarily determine the existence of alleged criminal responsibilities? Why are the inquisitorial powers of the CNE, which according to constitutional jurisprudence are exclusive, unknown? What scope does the interrogation to which they want to subject me intend to have?” González questioned in his statement.

Finally, González warned that the Electoral Chamber of the TSJ cannot usurp the functions of the CNE by “certifying” the results of a presidential election. He added that the law does not contemplate “co-admission” between the CNE and that court for the verification of electoral results.
