In a private medical center in the city of Culiacán, Mexico, María Consuelo Loera Pérez, mother of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as El Chapo Guzmán, died this Sunday followingnoon, December 10, reported the Mexican newspaper El Universal.
The circumstances that led to his admission to the hospital for medical treatment have not yet been revealed, but it is speculated that he died of natural causes.
María Consuelo, married to Emilio Guzmán Bustillos, spent most of her life in the community of Tuna, located in the Badiraguato mountain range, where all of her children were born. Two weeks ago she was transferred to Culiacán to receive medical attention, the media indicated.
According to reports from security authorities, El Chapo’s mother died at the age of 94 in a medical clinic located on Escobedo Street, in the heart of the capital city.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, it was learned that El Chapo Guzmán’s mother contracted the virus, which led her to spend three weeks in isolation and undergo medical treatment, eventually recovering from the disease.
At that time, it was learned, he asked the president for help to manage the possibility of meeting El Chapo in the United States, where he remains imprisoned following his capture and subsequent extradition in 2017.

So far, no Mexican authority has commented on the matter. Likewise, it has not been confirmed whether Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is already aware of the news, since he is behind bars at the ADX Florence federal prison in Colorado, considered the safest in the United States.
El Chapo was found guilty of the 10 crimes of which the US justice system accused him of drug trafficking, money laundering and use of firearms. On July 18, 2019, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment, a sentence he is serving in the ADX Florence prison.
The justice system accused him of having introduced into the country over a quarter of a century 1.44 tons of cocaine paste, 222 kg of heroin, almost 50 tons of marijuana and “quantities” of methamphetamines.
“I have suffered a lot being in solitary confinement. My blood pressure has risen, leading to headaches and anxiety. Sometimes I forget things. (…) They serve me little food and I often remain hungry (…). The treatment I receive is cruel and unfair, and is causing me to suffer psychological and health problems. (…) I am ruled out from having any verbal contact or communication with other prisoners,” El Chapo said regarding his days in prison through a letter written in October 2022.
