Let’s continue discovering the daily quests offered at the Margin of Aeons in Thaldraszus in patch 10.1.5. Today, I invite you to discover the one dedicated to Arthas and his horse Invincible.
I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. Since the quests are random, you’re never sure what you’re going to get. This is also the first time I can do this quest following regarding twenty attempts.
It all starts with a request from Chromie:
We’ve tasked a few well-meaning Wyrmlings to take some small story items. Small things can sometimes have a big impact. While they’re hard at work, I need someone to put those rocks back where they belong.
I know, it’s just pebbles! But you have to report them.
You are then propelled to the Glades of Tirisfal. In front of you is the location of the frozen rocks that you must place on the ground. Until then, you don’t have a clue what’s going on.
Except you see Arthas coming on his horse, Invincible.
What had to happen happened, the nag slips on the rocks. Arthas is obviously devastated and apologizes to his mount.
Arthas : Noooon !
Arthas: Invincible… Sorry…
And that’s all. We briefly see him gesture with both hands towards Invincible, but we don’t understand exactly what is happening. In reality, and as we can read in the novel Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, Invincible screams in agony, which wakes up Arthas, unconscious following this heavy fall. The book also gives much more detail on the event:
He stood up painfully. The world went black and he almost lost consciousness once more, but by force of will he held on. Slowly, he walked towards the panicked animal, fighting the pain, the wind and the snow that threatened to knock him down.
Invincible pounded the bloody snow with its two mighty hind legs unharmed and its two front legs broken. Arthas felt his stomach heave at the sight of the limbs, once so long, straight, neat and powerful, hanging at odd angles as Invincible tried and failed to stand. Then the image was thankfully blurred by the snow and the stream of hot tears that poured down her cheeks.
Invincible looked at him calmly, confidently, as if he understood what was going to happen, and the need to do it. It was more than Arthas might bear, and for a moment, tears once more clouded his vision. He pushed them away with a jerk. Arthas raised the sword and brought it down directly.
He did it well, at least; he pierced Invincible’s big heart with one strong blow with arms that should have been too cold to do so.
Arthas leaned down to look at the body of the horse he had named Invincible. He would let them all think it was an accident, because he mightn’t bear to tell anyone what he had done.
He then took an oath that if anyone else needed protection, that if sacrifices had to be made for the welfare of others, he would do so.
Whatever it takes, he thought.
In game, everything happens very quickly. The horse comes, falls then Arthas waves his hands then leaves. The scene takes exactly 10 seconds but would probably have deserved a longer treatment. In addition, the absence of snow does not allow you to really project yourself while this moment has deeply marked the prince.
Back in Thaldraszus, Chromie discusses the fact that certain missions must be carried out, even if they are difficult to live.
Thanks for doing this. Keeping the time pathways working isn’t always the funniest job, and sometimes you have to do things you don’t like. But the real timeline must run its course!
