Venezuelan Marcos Blanco won a bronze medal in the para-judo tournament at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on Thursday, after finishing third in the -60 kilogram (kg) category of the men’s event.

Blanco earned the award after defeating Indonesia’s Junaedi in a third-place fight in the J1 (visually impaired) class held at the Champs de Mars Arena in France.

The native won with a score of 10-0 in a fight in which he showed total superiority over his opponent, something that earned him a victory that he celebrated with his trainer Ovidio Almeida.

Road to bronze

Blanco’s road to bronze began in disappointing fashion, losing 10-0 to Indian athlete Kapil Parmar in the quarter-finals.

The setback forced the Creole to play a play-off, in which he beat the Chinese Shiwen Zhu 10-1 to advance to the round for the bronze medal, where he beat Junaedi.

Thanks to Blanco’s performance, Venezuela increased its total of medals at Paris 2024 from three to four. Previously, Enderson Santos (gold) and Lisbeli Vera (silver) won medals in para-athletics, while Clara Fuentes (gold) earned a distinction in the para-power event.
