Official contacts between the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and the administration of Joe Biden in the United States were resumed this week, news that did not sit well with the Republican senator for the state of Florida, Marco Rubio.

The official strongly rejected the idea that the US government would resume negotiations with Chavismo. “It is illogical and absurd,” he said.

In his statement he also spoke about the failure of the Chavistas to comply with the Barbados Agreement, which was signed in October of last year and which established the promotion of political rights and electoral guarantees for all Venezuelans.

“It is illogical and absurd for the Biden administration to resume negotiations with the criminal narco-regime of Maduro, which continues to violate the Barbados Accords. All this does is undermine the opposition and grant international legitimacy to the Maduro dictatorship. I warned that this would happen last year.”

Agreement

Marco Rubio’s disappointment comes as a result of the announcement by Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s president, about the resumption of an official dialogue with the North American country. According to the Chavista leader, he accepted the proposal that came from the Biden administration to resume contact.

The above happened last Wednesday, and the White House’s response was a request for a constructive and sincere dialogue. “We welcome dialogue in good faith. We are aware that democratic change will not be easy and requires a serious commitment,” a spokesman for the US National Security Council told EFE.

The first meeting between the two nations had already taken place on Friday, and according to Jorge Rodríguez, chief negotiator of the Venezuelan delegation, two main agreements were reached: 1) The willingness of both governments to work together to gain confidence and improve relations; 2) Maintaining communication in a respectful and constructive manner.
