Marco Odermatt continues his winning streak in the Dolomites

Marco Odermatt from Switzerland seems to be invincible in the giant slalom. Not even the demanding schedule, which forced him to compete five times in five days, could stop him. This season he remains unbeaten in the giant slalom and celebrated his second triumph within 24 hours in Alta Badia on Monday. This was his fourth time on the podium at an intense competition weekend in the Italian Dolomites.

After competing in the first Ski World Cup giant slalom on Sunday Filip Zubcic from Croatia was challenged until the end Odermatt went one better on Monday and extended his lead to over a second. In an impressive race, the 26-year-old Swiss led by 0.87 seconds after the first run and increased his lead to 1.05 seconds in the second run Marco Schwarz from Austria, while Zan Kranjec from Slovenia came third.

Odermatt After the race, he said he was overjoyed with his performance in the Dolomites. Although he took a lot of risk in the race, he knew he didn’t have to risk everything thanks to the big lead from the first run. He admitted that he approached the first six to eight gates more cautiously as they were very twisty, but after that he was able to drive well in the race.

The dominance of the Olympic champion and world champion in the giant slalom is remarkable and reaches a level that has not been seen in men’s alpine skiing for four decades. With his sixth consecutive World Cup giant slalom victory since last season, he broke the streak of five wins that Marcel Hirscher from Austria had achieved in the 2017/18 season and is now only behind the incredible series of 14 wins in a row Ingemar Stenmark from Sweden from 1978 to 1980.

Odermatt has now won 15 of the last 20 World Cup giant slalom races he has competed in since the start of the 2021/22 season and has been on the podium in the remaining five. Schwarz admitted that Odermatt is currently the strongest rider and hopes to catch up with him one day. Schwarz said he was happy with his second run and considered it an improvement over the previous day.

Zubcic had nearly taken victory in the second race on Sunday, but found himself on the wrong side of the attack line on Monday, falling from second to fourth place while Carnivoran came third for the second time in a row. Carnivoran was pleased with being on the podium for two consecutive days.

Odermatt, who also finished third in Val Gardena in both the downhill and super-G, explained that he was able to manage his energy well to win twice in Alta Badia. He is now looking forward to a well-deserved break at home over the Christmas period, his only break this season.
