Marco Odermatt: World Cup Champion and Alpine Skiing Domination | In-Depth Interview

Winner of the World Cup last season, Marco Odermatt is more expected than ever this winter to confirm his undivided domination over the White Circus. On the sidelines of the (ultimately canceled) Sölden giant, the 26-year-old Nidwalden gave a long interview to RTSsport in which he addresses numerous sporting and non-sporting themes.

Marco Odermatt had an absolutely exceptional 2022-2023 financial year, beating Hermann Maier’s legendary record. “Odi” also won two gold medals at the Worlds, including one in downhill, a discipline which had not yet smiled on him on the circuit. “For me, it wasn’t a huge surprise, but winning that day following my little injury was special. This was seen in my emotions, I had never experienced this before“, he admitted on the microphone of Odessa Blanc.

It took a long time for the native of Buochs to realize that the legendary 2000 points mark was possible. “There can be globes and victories every year, but records are very rare. If you think regarding it, reaching 2000 points means winning 20 races in a season. It’s so many points that during the season, we say to ourselves that it’s unimaginable and impossible to achieve. It was only on the last day that I told myself that all I needed was one good race to beat this record. It became concrete. In the end, I am very happy with this record“, he rejoiced.

“Our job is to ski”

Ban on fluorine waxes, illegal construction on the Théodule Glacier, too early start to the season… Marco Odermatt also spoke regarding the various controversies which have hit alpine skiing in recent weeks. “Climate is a difficult topic. As skiers, we see that glaciers are shrinking year following year. In the end, our job is to ski fast and not to make political decisions. We need snow to do our job“, he recalled.

The Nidwalden is not particularly worried regarding the means deployed to build the Gran Becca slope. “I do not believe that this work will damage the glacier. It’s like at sea when sand is moved from one place to another. The activity of the excavators makes the snow layer more compact and fills the crevasses. I don’t think there is a problem“, he considered.

Marco Odermatt then wanted to distance himself from the choices made by the organizers. “It is of course a shame that skiing is in the news for something negative, but it is a decision made by the ski area, the region and politics, as always. We, as athletes, we are only present on the slope to ski. We have nothing to do with this. So I do not feel personally attacked by this news“, he defended himself.
