It has gone through major crises, such as the collapse and reconstruction of the Morandi Bridge or the development of infrastructure, including the new Genoa-Milan connection (Third Pass), the modernization of the city’s railway hub, urban mobility, and the port. The city has inherited problems that are still unresolvedfor the aqueductswhich break due to flooding, or due to sewerswhich they occasionally dump into the sea, or for the air quality.
The choice of the candidate on the right was problematic, against the backdrop of a long political crisis, starting from the arrestsi under house arrest of May 8th of the then President of the Liguria Region, John TotiOf Aldo Spinelliport entrepreneur and Paul Signoriniformer president of the port authority, the latter in prison. The consensus has progressively weakened in the path that led to the Toti’s resignation on July 26thalmost three months after the arrests.
The names of the right-wing candidates that emerged seemed equally weak, including that of the MP Ilaria Cavoin a context in which the exponents of Toti’s area signed up to the various parties in the area, from Lega Salvini to Forza Italia.
The Salvini League tried to propose the Genoese Edoardo Rixicurrent deputy minister for infrastructure, as a coalition candidate, obtaining in response from the national parties the request for alternation with a non-Lega candidate in the Veneto Region. Finally, it should be noted that the choice of the candidate, although in consultation with the territory, occurred with a decision of the leaders of the national parties.
Bucci’s choice was partly slowed down by his health conditions: struck by skin cancer, he has just finished a period of chemotherapy, which he reported on social media.
Andrea Orlando’s Choice
The national left-wing parties have instead chosen Andrea Orlando already a few weeks ago. The coalition that supports him is in fact also integrated by the 5 Star Movementwhich confirmed its support on September 1st.
He began his political career at the age of 24, as City Councilor of La Speziawhere he was born, to become deputy since 2006, and minister between 2013 and 2018, for the Environment and then for Justice and finally between 2021 and 2022 with Mario Draghi at the Ministry of Labor. He is considered moderate line and his candidacy had to wait for the political construction, at a national level, of a coalition called “long field”.
Even in this case, the decision was not made at a regional level, but in the national headquarters of the parties. The 5 Star Movement had delayed in supporting, at the end of August, the different visions of the current leader, Joseph Conteand of the founder Beppe Grillo.
The two candidates they do not have much experience on cross-border issues. Marco Bucci However, he met the mayor of Nice in 2023, Christian Estrosiwith a view to a territorial cooperation agreement.
