The match between Legia Warszawa and Raków Częstochowa (1:2), played on Sunday at Łazienkowska, was a match in which there was a lot of football quality, emotions, but also yellow cards. Szymon Marciniak showed as many as 12 of them in this match, warning seven Legia players (Ribeiro, Augustyniak, Josue, Wszołek, Elitim, Kramer and Gil Dias) and five Raków players (Racovitan, Berggren, Papanikolaou, Cebula, Zwoliński).

Szymon Marciniak broke a personal record in the hit. But he did not avoid making a mistake
As noted by referee expert Rafał Rostkowski on the website sport.tvp.pl, twelve yellow cards in an Ekstraklasa match is a new personal record for Szymon Marciniak, who has been officiating top-flight matches for over 14 years.
Marciniak’s previous record was eleven yellow cards shown in the match between Śląsk Wrocław and Pogoń Szczecin (1:1) in December 2013, and in four other matches he warned players ten times.
Rostkowski believes that Marciniak showed all the cards rightly, and he might have shown even more. According to the expert, the best Polish referee did not avoid making an important mistake for the match. According to Rostkowski, in the 49th minute, Legia defender Yuri Ribeiro should have seen a red card for a foul on Fran Tudor, who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
“At the moment of the foul, Tudor began to “turn” towards Legia’s goal. He was still running towards the post, but it can be assumed that a few meters further he would have run with the ball towards the goal and might have taken a shot. If he had wanted to do that, none of his rivals would have been able to stop him because they were clearly too far away. In this interpretation variant, it was a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Looking at the situation like this, the Legia player should have been punished with a red card,” Rafał Rostkowski analyzed.
“The only evidence for a yellow card is that Tudor was not running straight in front of the goal (meaning: he was not running in a direction perpendicular to the goal), but was running straight towards the goal (meaning: he was running ‘almost straight’ towards the goal, approaching from the corner of the penalty area, i.e. at an angle from which the “clear” of the goal is smaller than the “straight ahead”). If this circumstance discouraged Tudor from taking a shot and he chose to pass the ball to John Yeboah, who is running in the middle, such a pass might be interrupted by someone running next to him. Steve Kapuadi. This variant might possibly justify showing a yellow card. We are dealing here with a certain ‘gibology’, or in other words: considering two interpretations of this action. Personally, I think that Tudor might have taken a shot or might have tried to trick the Legia goalkeeper and that is why In my opinion, a red card would be more appropriate in this situation,” said the sport.tvp.pl expert.
Many people also point out that another Legia player, Josue, might have received a second yellow and red card already in the first half for a foul on Giannis Papanikolaou. However, according to Rafał Rostkowski, the lack of warning for Legia’s biggest star cannot be considered a referee’s error.
– Personally, I believe that – given Josue’s imprudence – a better decision would have been to show a yellow card, although the decision not to issue a caution – given the content of referee training and on-field practices used by referees – is also acceptable. All the more so because referees are advised to show a second yellow card when it is necessary. In this case – echoing the refereeing instructors – it can be said that “this match did not need a second yellow card for the same player in this situation,” Rostkowski said.
Thanks to the win in Warsaw, Raków Częstochowa jumped to second place in the Ekstraklasa table with 22 points and one point behind the leader Śląsk Wrocław. Legia Warszawa is in fourth place with 20 points.
