The average air temperature in the first month of spring in Latvia was +3.4 degrees, which is 3.2 degrees above the March norm, according to data from the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology, writes LETA.
Previously, March was so warm in 2014 and 2015, while the record belongs to 2007, when the average temperature of the month reached +4.4 degrees.
The lowest air temperature last month was -10 degrees on March 11 in Madona, and the maximum temperature was +22.8 degrees on the last day of the month in Zvejniekciems.
The previous March national heat record was +20.8 degrees on March 30, 1968 in Mērsrags. In total, 53 heat records were broken last month.
The average rainfall in the first month of spring this year was 23.6 millimeters, or 64% of normal. The most precipitation – 44.7 millimeters – fell in Stende, and the least – in Rezekne, where 8.9 millimeters of precipitation was recorded.
The average relative humidity in Latvia in March was 79% – from 74% in Riga to 88% in Kolka.
The strongest gusts of wind – 20.2 meters per second – were observed on March 14 in Ventspils.
The duration of sunshine in most parts of the country exceeded the average for 1991-2020; in the Daugavpils area the sun shone even twice as much as usual, and in some places on the coast March was slightly less sunny than the national average.
