March 20th is just a “Freedom Day Light”

Freedom Day is a beautiful word. Especially for people who have experienced a pandemic with masks and sensitive freedom restrictions for two years. The term stands for the hope of a return to normality.

But a real Freedom Day like in other countries is not in sight in Germany. This was shown once once more by the prime ministers’ conference on Wednesday.

Almost all measures are to be gradually phased out by March 20th. That is sensible. The healthcare system is withstanding the pandemic and there is currently no sign of it being overwhelmed.

The premise of the corona policy has therefore been fulfilled, the reason for encroaching on fundamental rights is no longer applicable – actually. Because the federal and state governments are leaving some back doors open. Yes, loosening, but depending on the situation in the hospitals, they say.

That leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the prime ministers were unable to agree on a clear criterion, such as a specific hospitalization rate.

There are good reasons for the hesitant opening

In addition, a legal basis should enable “further protective measures” beyond March 20 if the infection rate worsens. Mask and hygiene rules will be part of everyday life for a long time to come, for example on buses and trains.

All of this is disappointing from the citizens’ point of view, but there are good reasons. The ifs and buts speak of uncertainty as to whether the pandemic will return with full force in the coming months. After all, a significant proportion of people are still unvaccinated.

Only speed in the vaccination campaign creates security here. However, it is far from certain that measures such as compulsory vaccination will come, following all there is no majority for one of the many proposals.

Freedom is not freedom if it can be restricted once more at any time. In this respect, March 20th is anything but a Freedom Day, but at most a Freedom Day light.
