The name of Marcelo Gallardo appeared in the portfolio of several European clubs in recent times, but for various reasons the Muñeco has not yet managed to land on the Old Continent. He had a formal proposal from Olympique de Marseille, with negotiations quite advanced and with some face-to-face meetings, taking advantage of a trip by the former River coach to Europe to rest for a few days with his son Nahuel. However, they did not reach an understanding and the Argentine coach’s last name was crossed off the list.

It was a matter of waiting until a new proposal appeared. And so it happened with Sevilla, which in the last hours fired José Luis Mendilibar and went out in search of a successor. One of the first targeted was Marcelo Gallardo, who is still without a club and enjoying his free time. According to César Luis Merlo, a journalist specialized in the transfer market, Seville offered the position to Muñeco but “for now, negotiations are a long way off”.

On more than one occasion, Marcelo Gallardo himself admitted that he was not in a hurry to make a decision and that he will take all the time necessary to return to directing. El Muñeco expects an offer that moves him from the sporting project, beyond the economic. And he hopes for a club in which he can replicate a good part of the management he carried out throughout the eight and a half years he was in charge of River.

Could Sevilla be that club that seduces Marcelo Gallardo? It is quite unlikely that Muñeco would agree to manage a club that fired its coach following six months and following having won the UEFA Europa League. However, there are two issues that might distort their decision: the four Argentines who are part of the squad (former River players Erik Lamela and Lucas Ocampos, as well as Federico Gattoni and Marcos Acuña) and the possibility of playing in the Champions League. For now the negotiations are cold and are closer to a no than a yes, they warn from Spain.
