The Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa reached an agreement with the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) to become the new coach of the national team until 2026, months following his option to leave join the structure of the Mexican Soccer Federation.
This was confirmed to the EFE Agency this Thursday by sources from the AUF, who remarked that for the moment the technical director has not signed his contract.
Bielsa, interested in Mexico
A couple of weeks ago, Jesús Martínez, president of Grupo Pachuca, announced that Bielsa was extremely interested in contributing his talent to Mexican soccerbut that proposal did not advance, despite the illusion that I had and the important project that was thought around him.
“My proposal was Bielsa as sports director, but next to him had to be Rafa Márquez, Jaime Lozano, Santiago Baños and Duilio Davino; because Marcelo is a teacher and you had to do a project for 8 or 16 years”.
Second Argentine in the sky
With his arrival in Uruguay, Bielsa will become the second foreigner to lead the Celeste following his compatriot Daniel Alberto Pasarella did it between 1999 and 2001.
Born in the city of Rosario in July 1955, Bielsa began his coaching career in 1990ten years following ending his stage as a footballer.
From that moment he led Newell’s Old Boys, the Mexicans atlas and americaVélez Sarsfield, the Spanish Espanyol and Athletic Club, the French Olympique de Marseille and Lille, as well as the English Leeds United.
Also he was the coach of Argentina in the period 1998-2004 and from Chile between 2007 and 2011. With the Albiceleste he won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Uruguay keeps the position of selector vacant since the departure of Diego Alonsowho took office on December 15, 2021 following the departure of Óscar Washington Tabárez and left him following the World Cup in which La Celeste did not make it past the group stage.
