Marcel Hug leaves the Paris Worlds with a third gold medal. The Thurgovian won gold in the 800m following his triumphs in the 5000 and 1500m.

On his wheelchair, the 37-year-old athlete is definitely unbeatable. Monday evening, the one who now has world titles set a new Worlds record in 1’29”00. Hug missed beating his own world record, set in May in Arbon, by around 1”50.

For Hug, the 800m was the toughest race of these world championships, but he got off to a good start and was able to pick up the pace towards the end. “I gave it my all once once more, and luckily it worked out,” said Hug, who ends the world championships as the third most successful athlete – behind her two teammates Catherine Debrunner and Manuela Schär, who brought home five and four medals respectively.

I am of course very happy for Switzerland and our team“, he noted before looking to the future and the Paralympic Games which will also take place in Paris in just over a year. “I hope we can have the same success“, he pointed out.
