Schwyz national councilor Marcel Dettling declares on Saturday that he is a candidate to succeed Marco Chiesa as head of the SVP, who will not run once more at the end of his mandate in March 2024. “The decision has been made”, indicates the farmer from Oberiberg, aged 42.
“I am going to run for president of the Democratic Union of the Center,” adds Marcel Dettling in a video published on the Blick online site. Citing the limitation of “overflowing immigration” as an example, he says he wants to focus on themes that concern the population, in order to continue the success of the SVP.
Vice-president of the SVP, Mr Dettling successfully led the last campaign for the federal parliamentary elections in October 2023. The party won nine additional seats in the National Council, achieving the third best result in its history and a share electoral vote of 27.9%.

UDC President Marco Chiesa, the first Latin speaker to hold office, announced at the end of December that he would not run once more at the end of his term in March 2024. “I had a mission to accomplish . And it is full,” explained the 49-year-old from Ticino, following helping to strengthen the country’s first team.
Under the leadership of Mr. Chiesa, the UDC, formerly partly confined beyond Sarine, has become the leading party in fifteen cantons. It now has thirteen French-speaking elected representatives in the Federal Chambers and has won a second seat in Ticino.
Considered one of the favorites to succeed Marco Chiesa, Mr. Dettling is the first to declare his candidacy. The SVP set up a selection committee headed by former national councilor and ex-president of the group Caspar Baader.
The cantonal sections can announce candidates until January 19. The delegates of the SVP Switzerland will elect the new president at their ordinary meeting on March 23, 2024 in Bern.
