Marc Sergeant, ex-sports manager of Lotto-Soudal, very critical of John Lelangue: “He makes a hole and then leaves the sinking ship”

Marc Sergeant was particularly critical following the announced departure of John Lelangue as general manager of Lotto Soudal, the team led for many years by Sergeant.

Imagine, you get a beautiful boat, it has been well maintained for decades and yet you start to put a hole in it, but when it sinks, you first get a new boat and then you leave the sinking ship“, wrote the former runner, 63, on Twitter, adding the hashtags #missiegeslaagd (“Mission accomplished“) and #outrageous” (“scandalous”).

Lelangue announced on Thursday that he will leave Lotto Soudal at the end of the season in order to raisea new challenge” in cycling. The 51-year-old from Brussels had been the strongman of the Belgian WorldTour team for four years. Lelangue’s departure comes as Lotto Soudal, who will be called Lotto Dstny next season, risks be relegated from the WorldTour.

After a 19-year career as sporting director, sporting manager and sporting adviser at Lotto Soudal, Sergeant was let go last year as part of a rejuvenation set up by Lelangue. Sergeant ended his racing career in 1995 with Lotto. He had also driven for the team between 1985 and 1987.
