Marc Marquez’s Decision to Leave Honda: The Future of MotoGP and Honda’s Response

MotoGP: Marc Marquez told Honda bosses he would return to the team in a year if the bike improved, but Honda reportedly rejected the idea. Marquez Marquez has confirmed that he will end his 11-year stint at Honda at the end of 2023, when he is expected to join Gresini Ducati on a one-year contract.

Six-time MotoGP champion Marquez said: “I promised in front of my Japanese bosses that I would return in 2025 as long as Honda takes a step forward in 2024 and we have a competitive bike once more.” Periodico reported. Marquez “surprised the head of HRC” by suggesting he would return to Honda “if the rider finishes in the top five at the next World Championship”, but was later “flatly rejected”. Honda reportedly wants to start the post-Marquez era by making improvements without using Marquez’s potential return as an incentive. Marquez’s offer was part of an “honest and open” conversation with Honda bosses Hikaru Tsukamoto and Koji Watanabe. Tsukamoto and Watanabe’s stance in negotiations with Star Rider was described as “rigid.” Marquez is likely to become a free agent in 2025 (which would have been had he honored the final year of his contract with Honda in 2024). After a year with Ducati, he has the potential to choose the best bike in MotoGP. If Honda returns to the top of the sport in the year that Marquez is absent, we cannot deny the possibility of a wonderful reunion.
