Marc Márquez announced on Friday that he was not thinking regarding Tuesday and would approach work every day with a healthy dose of risk. After finishing 3rd in the sprint, he explained that such a result was the best way to thank his team, with whom he had worked hard for eleven years.
Somehow there was a fear that the Valencia adventure might end painfully for the Repsol Honda star, because he had set his sights on a top 5 place for the full-distance race on Saturday and raced from ninth on the grid in the first lap After some hairy maneuvers, he came second behind Bagnaia.
He then became involved in some banter and fell back to 5th behind Zarco, with Viñales and Martin stuck to his rear wheel on the third lap. Márquez had already announced on Saturday that he would not show much consideration for his compatriot, but in fact the two brawlers clashed in Turn 4 on the fifth lap and both crashed. Martin wanted to get in on the inside of this right-hand bend, but there was no space, he straightened the bike up quickly, brushed once morest the Honda factory rider – and sent him into an orbit.
Jorge Martin thought he was innocent. “Because I was on the inside,” said the Pramac Ducati rider. Well, that’s a bit of a distorted picture, because he was to the left of Marc Márquez when he hit the ball.
«I don’t want to claim that a podium would have been possible once more today. But I had a good pace, I felt strong and I managed the tires well. Jorge was a bit too optimistic during this overtaking maneuver. But I won’t criticize him because I understand his mentality 100 percent. He did a warm-up with Viñales… And I can imagine he only had eyes for the red one up front. That’s why he attacked. As a driver, I understand him, he has already apologized to me.”
«But this incident today changes the emotions that have overcome me this weekend. It was super nice, on Saturday evening we had a nice farewell evening with all the Honda people. I don’t even want to talk regarding a ‘good bye’… Many emotional scenes took place in the box today too.”
Does this cryptic remark mean that there might be a reunion with Honda as soon as the bike is capable of winning once more? Márquez: “Of course a new chapter begins for me. But I definitely don’t want to slam the doors. That’s why I repeat now: The relationship with Honda has been amazing. And when we decided to end our collaboration, we did so by mutual agreement. I have a lot of respect for this solution. That’s why I want to leave the door to Honda open.”
What happened to Marco Bezzecchi who crashed on the first lap? «I don’t want to waste a lot of time and a lot of words with this driver. Because he pushed me out a lot during the season. It was a normal situation, I was on the inside, he wanted to defend his line and counterattack in turn 4. But if you’re out there, you’ll lose the duel. Because the driver in the inside lane can maintain speed. I did the same from turn 2 to turn 3, then we were next to each other, he didn’t want to lose out… There’s nothing more to say regarding it.”
