Sources in judicial circles in the Netherlands and Belgium confirmed the information to the Dutch newspaper De Limburger. A request for legal assistance has been filed in Belgium, in which justice asks to compare the unknown female DNA found in the houses and vans of Dutroux with that of Tanja Groen. The results will be transmitted “as soon as possible” to the Dutch Limburg public prosecutor’s office, the public prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Andries of the Liège public prosecutor’s office told the Dutch media.
Investigation duties are also carried out. The “cold case” cell of the Dutch Limburg police spoke to various witnesses. The investigators are also examining whether the facts and circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Tanja Groen can be linked to Marc Dutroux. His methods, in which he abducted girls and loaded them with their bikes into a van, might match the way Tanja Groen, last seen cycling in Maastricht in the summer of 1993, disappeared.
