Marburg virus
Twelve people have died in Equatorial New Guinea from the virus so far, in addition to four more deaths in Tanzania.
The virus, which belongs to the same family as Ebola pathogens, is usually transmitted from prolonged exposure to caves and mines, where infected individuals experience a “ghost-like” appearance, according to the World Health Organization.
Other symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting as well as a high fever, severe headache, and severe malaise. Many patients with the virus develop bleeding following seven days, with a non-itchy rash appearing two to seven days following infection.
Patients may also suffer from frequent bleeding from the gums, nose, and vagina, and the patient usually dies following eight or nine days. So far, there is no current treatment for the Marburg virus, which leaves people with bouts of abdominal pain, cramps, and muscle pain as well.
There is currently no cure for MVD, but a range of potential treatments include blood products, immunotherapies, and drugs. Treating rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids is key to care.
