It was the dream debut of Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez in Luna Park, since in the first round took the victory by KO in the fight once morest the Colombian John Tehran. It was the sixth triumph of the Buenos Aires boxer since his return to the ring in 2020. This time he had the special flavor of having achieved it in a venue with as much history as the sports palace in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
Maravilla needed just 1 minute and 27 seconds to beat his opponent with an accurate left-footed shot. After the fight, he looked very exultant in his first words that came above the ring: “I am infinitely grateful for having received this support, this warmth. I am very powerful, the fucking mother!”
Then he launched a motivating phrase in which, despite his 48 years, he is more current than ever: “Don’t be made to believe that at 48 you are finished. They can’t make you believe that you ended up at 48 years old, so from here until the World Cup I won’t stop, fucking good. Let’s go!”
Then he descended from the ring and, calmer, highlighted “having been part of the Ringo series event. Being surrounded by friends. I am infinitely grateful.”
Martínez is second in the ranking of the world boxing association (WBA), whose regular super welterweight champion is the Cuban Erislandy Lara and the super champion is the kazakh Guennadi Golovkin. He is very involved with the chance to be world champion once more and he stressed that “i’m regarding candy. I am very strong mentally. I have many years on me that I might assimilate well. This year the World Cup match has to take place. It is very hard work. I have been winning four by KO and two by points. I know it’s crazy but it can be done. Holy madness. Thanks to this I was able to get back into the ring. I was able to get together with 20-year-old guys who are very hungry.”
On why he fought once more, he replied that “life is there to challenge big things. I don’t like to say ‘tomorrow I’m going to get up and I’m going to feed the pigeons’. Let me train to challenge the best, to Golovkin. I like to face challenges and take charge. I know that when I took the reins, half an hour ago I was not the same person that I am now. You never get out of the ring being the same person. I am looking for the personal evolution of a personal challenge”.
He also reflected on having added his name to the notable Argentines who fought at Luna Park: “Everyone fought here, from Monzón, Gatica, Castro, Coggi, Vázquez, Domínguez, Narvaez, Galíndez, Ringo, Locche, I was missing. I’m happy to have put Luna Park in my own heart.”
Regarding what is to come, he maintained that “elimination or championship I am the same. I am ready to face whoever I have to face because at this point in life and in the ranking to be dodging… I really want to”. Martínez has a global of 57 wins (32 on the fast track), 3 losses and 2 draws,
The evening organized by Chino Maidana Promotion (CMP) had three previous duels that were played following the official launch of the series dedicated to Oscar “Ringo” Bonavenawhich will be released on March 24 by Star+.
