Maquiladora exports exceed US$ 610 million at the end of July

Asuncion, IP Agency.- At the end of July, exports totaled USD 618 million, 6% more than that recorded in the same period in 2023, when they reached USD 581 million, according to the latest report from the National Council of Export Maquila Industries (CNIME).

In terms of monthly values, this incentive also showed a considerable rebound in the seventh month of the year, totaling a value of USD 105 million in its exports, increasing by 18% compared to July of the previous year.

Regarding the items sent under this regime, the report indicates that, at the end of July, 81% of these were concentrated in the auto parts sector, with a 28% share; followed by clothing, with 19%; food products, with 14%; aluminum and plastics, with 13%.

Likewise, by the end of 2023, exports from the maquiladora industries represented 68% of Paraguay’s exports of manufactured goods of industrial origin.

Maquila markets

Regarding the destinations of manufactured goods from maquiladora industries, the document indicates that, in the first seven months of 2024, 77% of exports were destined for Mercosur countries.

Of this block, Brazil leads as a shipping destination with a 63% share; followed by Argentina, with 10% of purchases. Also listed as destinations are the Netherlands and the United States, with 5% each; followed by Chile, with 3%; and Uruguay and Bolivia, with 2% each.
It should be noted that the Maquila regime, in the last 12 months, managed to open 14 new markets worldwide, through the export of its manufactures.

Among the products that have generated this opening are ethanol, biodiesel, casings, synthetic fiber for reinforcing concrete, shredded coconut, gelatin, paddle tennis rackets, polyethylene (HDPE) and balanced feed.

These new revenues are in line with the vision of the Government of Paraguay with the conquest of more destinations and the diversification of exported products.

Generated labor

The latest report reveals that there are currently 26,909 jobs linked to the Maquila regime until July 2024, which represents an increase of 4% in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, in the month of July alone, this regime generated 369 new jobs, compared to the end of June 2024.

The clothing and textile, auto parts, plastics and their manufactures, intangible services and miscellaneous manufacturing sectors employ 71% of the workforce.

Likewise, the chemical and pharmaceutical products, wood, food products, agrochemicals, and other sectors concentrate a considerable amount of Paraguayan labor.

Regarding the location of these industries, 90% of the companies with approved maquila programs are located in the departments of Alto Paraná, with 47%; Central, with 28%; Capital and Amambay, with 8% and 7%, respectively, according to the report.

Positive balance

Regarding imports by the maquiladora industries, in the first seven months of the year these totaled purchases worth USD 332 million, which represents an increase of 14% compared to the previous period.

Considering that exports exceeded the sector’s purchases by 86%, the trade balance of the maquiladora industries is positive for the country.
