(Keystone-ATS) Maou won the 2024 Geneva BD Zoom Prize for his album “Fleur de prunier”, published by Antipodes. The author recounts the journey of her adoption in the 1990s in China, shedding light on the one-child policy.

Nearly a thousand young people spread across 69 classes participated in the designation of the winning album, the Department of Public Instruction (DIP) said on Friday. This prize of 10,000 francs aims to highlight the richness of French-speaking comics. It also helps to stimulate a taste for reading among the secondary II students who make up the jury.

The three finalist works were “Embrasse-moi” by Lidia Mathez, “Eye Contact” by Simon Beuret and “Fleur de prunier”. In this award-winning album, Maou, who represents humans in animal form, tells his story and that of his parents in a light and funny tone. She succeeds in projecting her readership forty years back.

Born in China and adopted in France, Maou, whose real name is Meili Gernet, came to Lausanne in 2009 to study at ECAL. She then stayed there. She has already released several albums, including “HEJ!” in 2016, who draws inspiration from her personal experience to tell the story of the setbacks of an Ikea cashier.

The BD Zoom competition is organized by the DIP and the BNP Paribas Suisse Foundation. The 2024 trophy was presented to the winner on Friday following a round table with the three finalists and discussions with the students.
