A widespread shower of prizes poured over the local theaters and opera houses on Thursday evening. At the eleventh presentation of the Austrian Music Theater Awards in the Vienna City Hall, the Vienna State Opera secured three awards. The Volksoper Wien, the Theater an der Wien and the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck followed closely with two prizes each.

The Vienna State Opera was successful in the category “Best Male Leading Role”, which Andreas Schager secured for his performance in “Tristan und Isolde”. The two supporting role awards for Patricia Nolz (Zerlina in “Don Giovanni”) and Boris Pinkhasovich (Jeletzki in “Piqué Dame”) also went to the Haus am Ring. Nina Stemme convinced the jury as an artist in “Jenůfa” at the Theater an der Wien and thus secured the category “Best Female Leading Role”.

The awards for the best overall productions were distributed across Austria. In the opera category, the Landestheater Innsbruck received the award with “The Passenger”. The operetta category went to the Landestheater Linz for “Der Graf von Luxemburg” and the Volksoper Wien for “La Cage aux Folles” in the musical category. In the eyes of the jury, the Salzburg State Theater delivered the best contemporary music theater with “Angels in America”.

The Director’s Prize went to Angela Denoke for “Salome”, which she staged at the Landestheater Innsbruck. Christian Thielemann received the best musical direction for “Lohengrin” at the Salzburg Easter Festival.

Special prizes went to Otto Schenk and the Romanian soprano Ileana Cotrubas for lifetime achievement. Julia Koci secured that of the jury as Liza Elliott in “Lady in the Dark” at the Vienna Volksoper, that for dance Florentina Holzinger and those for youth the Vienna Choir Girls.

“Austria is the epicenter of music theatre,” said Karl-Michael Ebner, initiator and president of the Austrian Music Theater Prize, and described the award as the start of a new journey. “In the future, the music theater prize will also look beyond national borders and honor cultural excellence.” This year’s award winners are proof that outstanding achievements break through and connect the boundaries of what is known. Vienna’s City Councilor for Culture, Veronica Kaup-Hasler (SPÖ), congratulated the winners for their excellent work, “which ensures cultural diversity and excellence on our stages, stimulates discourse and promotes social reflection”.
