The Board of Trustees of the Interamerican University announced this followingnoon the departure of the president of the institution, the lawyer Manuel J. Fernós, who held the position since 1999.
Immediately, the rector of the Arecibo campus, Rafael Ramírez Rivera, was appointed as interim president, informed the president of the Board of Trustees, José R. Munoz Ávila, through a press release.
Prior to his appointment more than two decades ago as president of the Inter-American, Fernós was dean of the Faculty of Law and rector of the Inter-Metro campus.
He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and holds a Master of Laws from New York University. In addition, she obtained a diploma in Advanced Studies from the Complutense University of Madrid. In her time at the head of the university system, she came to preside over the Association of Private Colleges and Universities of Puerto Rico (ACUP) and has been a member of multiple local and international organizations, such as the Hispanic Educational Technology Services (HETS).
Under his presidency, Fernós focused on expanding the academic offerings of the Inter-American University and the internationalization of the institution.
