Manousakis (ADMIE): We have secured the 2 GW electrical space for the development of the first Offshore Wind Farms

“ADMIE has ensured the necessary electrical space of the order of 2 GW to start the nationally important new market of Offshore Wind Parks in Greece”, emphasized the President and CEO of ADMIE, M. Manousakis, speaking in the context of a special conference organized by today the ELETAEN for the development of the supply chain of the PPE. He added that soon there will be announcements about exactly where the MWs are committed per region.

Offshore Wind Farms are critical to achieving a central goal of energy policy, which is to transform Greece into a clean energy exporter, from the fossil fuel importer it has been historically, Mr. Manousakis noted. In fact, the long-term planning for the development of 12 GW renewable energy projects in the coming decades “illuminates” even more the necessity of export-oriented cross-border interconnections launched by ADMIE, so that the excess of green energy that will also be produced by offshore wind farms can transported to the consumption centers of central Europe. This “framework” includes projects such as the second Greece-Bulgaria interconnection that was recently completed, the second Greece-Italy interconnection, the Greece (Crete)-Cyprus-Israel interconnection and also the large Greek-Southern Germany electrical “corridor” Green Aegean Interconnector .

As the head of ADMIE said, the name “Green Aegean” refers exactly to Offshore Wind Farms. “The development of offshore parks in the North Sea is not enough, it is required to efficiently produce green energy in the south of Europe and transport it to the North”, in order to ensure the energy autonomy of Epirus and reduce its dependence on third-party suppliers” , he said, among other things, stressing that regional collaborations are needed in this direction.

Mr. Manousakis mentioned that ADMIE cooperates perfectly with the Ministry of Environment and Energy and EDEFEP within the framework of the Committee for the Connection and Development of Networks of Offshore Wind Parks and in particular in critical matters such as the calculation of the maximum potential for absorbing wind power from each marine area, the determination of an indicative timetable and cost of the interconnection of the regions as well as the achievement of synergies with the submarine interconnection networks for the interconnection of the Non-Interconnected Islands.

He also highlighted the importance of the development of the YAP, as “the creation of a national economy in our seas – and especially in the Aegean region – will geopolitically strengthen our country”, as he characteristically stated. And the development of a supply chain with Greek industry and domestic infrastructure in a central role will produce significant economic benefits.

Concluding his presentation, Mr. Manousakis underlined that ADMIE, in collaboration with all the involved bodies, is working intensively on the issue of Offshore Wind Farms in Greece. “We are participating with all resources in the Coordination Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the entire institutional system in Greece is aligned so that we can proceed quickly and with the greatest possible efficiency in the development of Offshore Wind Farms in the Greek seas.”
