Pro-Palestinian activists vandalized the Manneken Pis statue yesterday Sunday, La DH learns. They wrapped the statue in a bloody shroud. A Palestinian flag and a “Stop Genocide” poster were plastered on the protective grid in front of the fountain.
The Brussels-Capital-Ixcelles police zone confirmed the incident and opened an investigation while the flag was seized. She will analyze the camera images to try to identify the perpetrators.
For the president of the Friends of Manneken Pis, Marc Guebel, this act is “scandalous” because Manneken Pis had nothing to do with it. “I find this gesture quite violent. It is also a lack of respect. Manneken Pis is apolitical, just folkloric. We have already refused political requests, such as that of nurses during Covid. In the end, they gave Manneken Pis a costume, it’s much more respectful.”
Manneken Pis is quite regularly the target of vandals or activists. So, last year alone, it was repainted yellow two or three times without anyone ever knowing who the author was.
