The first human case of West Nile virus infection has been detected in Manitoba, and three more probable cases are being investigated, the province said Friday.

The infected person is 40 to 49 years old and lives in the Winnipeg Health Region. She had neurological symptoms and was hospitalized. She was most likely exposed to the virus in late June and early July, a statement said.

It is not uncommon to have cases of West Nile virus contamination in Manitoba. Last year, for example, there were seven cases, five of which resulted in hospitalization.

The province believes that the current risk of exposure is high due to recent weather conditions that have been favorable to striped-legged mosquitoes (Culex tarsalis), the species carrying the virus.

Most of the time, infected people do not develop symptoms or have mild symptoms. However, in some cases, more serious symptoms that can lead to hospitalization or even death may occur.

It can take months or years to recover from West Nile virus infection, especially severe symptoms, the statement said.

So far, 45 mosquito populations infected with West Nile virus have been detected in Manitoba this year, including 8 in the week of August 13-19.
