Dubai: Manikandan Gurus, famous for performing Kalaripayat at the Expo venue, is expanding his activities to more areas. The third branch of VKM Kalari under his leadership will be opened in Dubai Al Nahda.

Manikandan Gurukul said in a press conference that Kalari Gurukul Meenakshiamma will inaugurate the branch in Al Ahli Building, Al Nahda 2 at 5 pm on Sunday. He stated that the importance of Kalaripayat will be brought to more people in the UAE and the aim is to spread the fame of the martial art in the Arab country.

Payat is recited to the disciples in various stages such as Maypayat (Meithari), Vadipayat (Kolthari), Walpayat (Ankathari) and bare hand application. Model of sword, shield, spear and dagger are also made in wood to train Ankathari.

A lot of new generation people including girls are entering this field and learning self defense. People between the ages of five and 60 are practicing at the Golden Star Kalari in Karama. Low income students are also educated for free. Many people are also trained in special exercises to overcome the physical difficulties caused by Covid. Apart from the Dubai Expo, Kalaripayat also performed at venues like Sharjah Cricket Stadium and Al Nasser Leisure Land. Girija, Subi, Imtiaz Qureshi and others participated in the press conference.
