Afifah Khalid, a young entrepreneur, told Independent Urdu that in recent years, mango production in Pakistan has decreased by 25% due to ‘a drastic change in seasons, non-arrival of spring and extreme heat.’
Afifah Khalid said: ‘Due to climate change, summer started earlier this year, due to which the mango fruit looked ripe, but was raw inside.
“There was a delay in the production of some varieties, like Chonsa which usually reaches the market fully ripe in June, but this year it came in late July. Due to all these reasons, 25% reduction in mango crop was seen this year.
He added: ‘Not only has the production of mangoes decreased, but the size of the mangoes has also remained small, which has affected exports. Due to reduced production and smaller size of mangoes, prices were lower than what should have been fetched, so not only farmers but also young entrepreneurs and traders had to suffer.’
Afifah Khalid advised to adopt climate smart agriculture to avoid reduction in production of fruits especially in Pakistan due to climate change and said: ‘Farmers should be provided with weather forecasting tools so that they can calculate the weather. Save your crop. By doing this, there will be minimal damage to the crop.’

Saeed Khan said: “The current year’s mango export has been reduced to 100,000 tons compared to last year’s target of 100,000 tons, but it is possible that even this target will not be achieved.”
