Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod review: light, but frustrating

The design of the Manfrotto Compact Action is hardly original. It is even very classic. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. It is thus easy to deploy with its valve system, and even neophytes will find their way there. We prefer this precise and practical system to the screw-type system.

A convoluted head

The head is much more original. It consists of a ball head and a protruding handle that looks like a stick. Its operation is a hybridization of the two usual systems: to tilt the head in all directions, it is necessary to loosen the knob located on the handle. Tightening it allows the position to be blocked. To rotate the head horizontally, you have to play with the small latch located above the kneecap. The intensity of the tightening of the knob of the handle makes it possible to adjust the fluidity of the movements.

A not quick plateau

The Compact Action does not have a quick release plate and offers a more restrictive system. In a fairly classic way, you first have to screw a small hook under the camera. This hook is then attached to a location at the top of the head. Then, we must close the latch that holds it in place. Finally, to secure the position, it is also necessary to adjust a dial marked “+” and “-“. A method that is not very ergonomic and which would have deserved a simplification.

We told you previously regarding the lack of a low position. Indeed, the amplitude of the feet is quite limited and does not allow to go below 40 cm. It is therefore necessary to invert the column – which is easy – to be able to take pictures at a small fifteen centimeters from the ground.
