It was well known that Joe Manchin was a tough nut to crack. In recent months, the West Virginia senator has forced President Joe Biden and the left-wing Democrats to cut their social and climate protection program from $3.5 trillion to around $2 trillion. Manchin was able to do this because his party needs all the votes in its own camp in the balanced Senate in order to be able to pass a law with a casting vote by Vice President Kamala Harris.
