Andre Onana says Manchester United can take a boost from the way they beat FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Manchester United achieved its first win in the UEFA Champions League this season thanks to Harry Maguire’s second-half goal. In extra time of the second half, the victory was preserved thanks to Onana’s brilliant save of Jorgen Larsson’s penalty kick.
Manchester United, led by coach Erik ten Haag, performed much better in the second half and won their third consecutive official match recently. This is a result that instilled confidence in Onana ahead of the upcoming games, starting with the Manchester derby once morest Manchester City on Sunday.
Oh Nana the goalkeeper
“It was an important win for us.”
“We had to win this game to continue this competition,” he said. “We are Manchester United and we have a lot of ambition and expectations.”
“We had to win this game. The first three games have already been played. We’re such a big team, we can’t go out fast. “You have to fight and play hard.”
“I’m delighted with Harry Maguire’s goal. He was a hero tonight. I am happy with his performance. Maguire played a good game once more. We must continue like this. It will definitely become stronger. It won’t be easy. It will give us confidence for the games ahead, but the challenge is high so we will give our all and prepare. “We have to fight for every game, every competition, because we are one of the best clubs in the world.”
A win on Tuesday was vital in keeping United’s hopes of progressing through Group A alive, but those hopes were almost dashed when Copenhagen were awarded a penalty in second-half stoppage time.
However, Onana, who is famous for blocking penalty kicks, calmly dived to the left and blocked Larsson’s shot.
“I just did my job. “I didn’t feel pressured, I waited calmly for as long as I might and blocked it.”
Manchester United had an emotional night by placing wreaths in memory of Sir Bobby Charlton in the stands and directors’ box seats before kick-off.
“He has done a lot for this amazing club. “This win is for him because it has been a difficult time for the club and especially his family.”
